Xiaomi makes Redmi a separate brand; Lei Jun explains the reasoning behind the move

Xiaomi has just announced that it is making Redmi an independent brand, apart from the Mi brand. The company has also announced that it is planning to launch the first Redmi branded smartphone for the sub-brand at a launch event on January 10. As mentioned earlier, this Redmi -branded smartphone is set to sport a 48-megapixel camera sensor. In announcing the move, the company did not disclose the reason behind the move, Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun disclosed the motivation behind this move, responding to a user on the Chinese social media website Weibo.

According to the clarification, June said that this step is to ensure that the Xiaomi Redmi brand is paying more attention. This step will also separate the Mi and Redmi brands from each other because the focus of both brands is different. As mentioned by GizmoChina, the Mi brand is in the forefront of launching high-end smartphones, while the purpose of the Redmi brand is to bring a "price-for-money" smartphone into the budget and entry-level price segment. This has reduced the total number of smartphone brands in India to three. This includes newly formed Redmi, MI and Poco. To recap, Poco's aim is to give a "premium" smartphone at affordable prices.

This is not a new move because other companies including Huawei and Oppo have advanced their device lineup in standalone brands by the way. Last year, Oppo launched "Realme" to focus on the budget and entry-level segment in the Indian smartphone market, while Huawei launched a different brand honor.

It is also possible to separate the already popular unit Radmi from its Chinese roots in the Indian smartphone market. The company will launch its first smartphone as an independent brand on the launch event on January 10.
