WhatsApp to Soon Get ‘Status’ Feature on KaiOS Devices Like JioPhone

Mozilla's Firefox OS may not be able to compete against Android in the low-cost smartphone sweepstakes, but for many, a Contacted version of the software has been gaining a huge user-base over the years. Called 'KaiOS', Firefox OS-based operating system, holds the power of basic feature phones such as Jio Phone and Nokia 8110. It has a combined user-base of over 100 million, making it the third-largest mobile platform in the world after Android. And iOS.

While KaiOS is apparently lacking in apps compared to the two smartphone platforms, several popular social media applications, in particular, are now available on the platform. Like ChromeOS, KaiOS is essentially a browser with HTML5 and JavaScript. So more often than not, the Kaios app is basically a mobile website that can be stored locally. Services such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp are pre-loaded as HTML5 applications on all KIOS devices.

WhatsApp was, of course, the most sought after JioPhone users, and it was finally launched on the platform in June 2019. However, the app still lacks some of its basic features that are acceptable to Android and iOS users, including voice- calling and WhatsApp Web. Unfortunately, Joe Grinstead, software engineering lead on WhatsApp on Kaios, says neither of the two features will be available on the platform.

However, WhatsApp is set to roll out its OS status' feature to KaiOS devices soon. Speaking to Harish Jonnalagadda of Android Central, Grinstead said that Kai Status' feature on KIOS is on "Gold Master", meaning that it is all set to roll out. Grinstead also said that his team is working on introducing more features on the platform in the coming months.
