First Imaging Technique That Makes Organism Completely Transparent

LMU researchers have developed a novel bioimaging technique that provides top notch insights into nerve-cell interactions in mammals and other organisms. This technique has been developed based on the method of making organ organs and tissues transparent. This new imaging technique has recently attracted the research community and promises to change the method of study of the nervous system.

Dr. Ali Ertürk of Medical Center from Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research Ali Ehrkt, along with the main researcher, developed a team . This new imaging technique is called vDISCO. vDISCO has represented an extension of the previous law, which has been termed as the UDISCO, whose details were first published in a separate research paper by Ertürk and his colleagues in 2016. Current research findings have been published in Nature Neuroscience.
vDISCO also works by altering the limbs, even making the entire organism transparent, which makes it easier to perform imaging procedures. Researchers can analyze individual cells by blurring specific proteins with antibodies labeled with fluorescent markers. Since organisms turn to see through the tissue permits of light passing the required light to stimulate fluorescent signals.
Using an initial imaging system uDISCO, Ertürk and the group were able to have a broad view of the mouse's intact nervous system but lacked clarity as other bones and tissues were also visible. While in vDISCO, the whole organism becomes transparent by using a mixture of chemicals, whose structure was modified. This makes it the first technique that is capable of making whole animals completely transparent.

The complex nervous system of small mammals can now be imagined completely using vDISCO. Through this technique, scientists will now be able to study cellular-nerve interactions, for example, due to swelling and wound healing. It already provides researchers to analyze unexpected structural connections between remote organs.
