NCBS Bangalore Scientist’s Novel Discovery To Treat Type 2 Diabetes
The National Center for Biological Sciences, a group of scientists in NCBS Bangalore, has come up with a discovery that can develop effective treatment for type 2 diabetes.
The research team has found an enzyme - PIP4K whose task is to determine the ability of cells to detect and respond to insulin. In type 2 diabetes, the ability of the cell to respond to insulin after food is reduced.
Its global health risk and more than 70 million people in India alone are reported to be diabetic. The discovery of PIP4K enzyme can address this health issue.
If a therapeutic agent has been developed against this PIP4K enzyme, which can inhibit its activity, and in turn, could produce more phosphinoideside lipids required for better response to insulin.
This research was supported by the National Center for Biological Sciences, along with DBT-India Government and Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance Senior Fellowship. The report of the study was published in the cell report.
Pro. Raghu Patinjet - Lead researcher said that his team has identified an interesting connection of the PIP4 enzyme, which has sign signaling. By changing the function of PIP4K enzyme, the effect of insulin on cells can be changed.
Research was conducted using Drosophila because it is very easy and convenient for analyzing the functions of a fruit fly, by organizing suitable experiments which is not possible if a large species is taken as a model organism is.
Fluorescence microscopy, molecular biology and biochemical techniques were used throughout the whole.
